The Cook and
Eat programme is a local project which aims to
address the issue of childhood obesity.
Through the Hampshire Food Forum,
Eastleigh Borough Council's Health Development Officer linked
up with local school meals provider, HC3S and Hampshire
Primary Care Trust (Western) to develop the Cook and Eat project
which improves parents and children's knowledge and skills around
healthy eating.
The programme aims to teach parents and children:
- Practical cooking skills
- Ideas on how to eat healthily
- Food hygiene and safety
- How to budget and reduce food bills
- How to create menus for the family
To ensure the course is run effectively, it should:
- Last for six weeks;
- Take place straight after school or in school time after school
meals are finished.
- Last 90-120 minutes per session to allow plenty of time to
prepare, eat and talk about the session.
Cook and Eat Toolkit
Due to the popularity of the Cook
and Eat courses run in schools throughout Hampshire, the Hampshire
Food Forum and it's partners Eastleigh Borough Council, Hampshire
County Council Caterers (HC3S), Hampshire Primary Care Trust
(Western) have developed a resource pack to help support schools
deliver 'hands on' cooking activities with parents and young
people.
